Summer cycling season 2018 is here

It's the non-slippery time of the year: the last snow we had was three weeks ago! That means summer tires. And to use them you need to change them.

I was going to just quickly blog about having changed tires. That was over two weeks ago. Since then I've been quite busy and tired (pun!). And it turns out [my blog system]({{ relref "website-setup.md" }}) didn't do image embeds the way I like them1 so I rolled my own. But I'm being tiresome (another pun2).

Changing tires

So I changed our car tires and finally figured out a combination of equipment that makes it easy. But that's uninteresting. Let me blabber about my bikes instead. I've got three bikes, and two of them had winter tires in the front. I didn't put any in the back this winter. I wasn't happy with the tires on the third one, either, so basically I changed five out of my six bicycle tires.

I've got three-year-old twins. During the tire change, which lasted about a week in total, I realized the 8-second tire change must have been invented by a father of small children. I love doing stuff with my kids and it's great that they sometimes help with my projects too. But sometimes it takes five separate sessions to get one wheel off, empty the tube, take the tire off the rim, get the new tire and tube seated on, inflate it and reinstall the wheel. A 15-minute job.

This is the setup I ended up with this time:

City bike

Schwalbe Kojak (35-622). When I bought the cyclocross bike in 2016 I needed some better tires and felt like Kojak is a good compromise between cost, puncture resistance, quality and size. Later I learned their rolling resistance isn't that great. Good enough for me, really, but I've also had a puncture on them and the rear tire is starting to be a bit worn out.

Schwalbe Marathon Almotion (40-622). After realizing how great good tires are compared to bad tires and having plenty of flats on my city bike, I decided I needed a better pair of tires for it too. I'd learned about rolling resistance tests and since quality tires were on sale, I went for the best rolling touring tire.3 Clearly too good for my city bike, but they also fit on my cyclocross and don't seem to slow my going---I made my one-hour average speed record when I had a Kojak in the front and an Almotion in the back. Yeah, they're heavy and far from supple, but I'm mostly commuting, sometimes touring and never racing.

Singlespeed

Continental Grand Prix 4000 S II (28-622). I've avoided proper road tyres this far, but the singlespeed came with horrible tires, the Kojaks fit too tightly with mudguards and there was a good deal on the GP4000s. Great tires, but I'd like to have them a bit wider. The aerodynamics and weight penalty of 32mm or so would be negligible in my use. And I'll be unhappy about their puncture resistance when I get a flat.

Having once changed a tire before because of a flat had me prepared with new rim tapes. But it was worse than I thought or remembered:

Other maintenance

Due to weather and stuff I've mostly been riding the singlespeed. It didn't take me long to be annoyed with the rusty, worn-out chain that I was already supposed to change earlier.

After changing the chain I noticed a clunk while pedaling that I'd forgotten. I was pretty sure it was the freewheel and as it didn't get better with oil, I got a brand-new Shimano freewheel. The history of the bike is that I bought it used last summer for very cheap and gathered used cheap parts for a while until I could convert it to drop bars. This spring it's getting some new parts and I'm starting to realize I really like this bike.

I really bought the 925 to try out fixed gear. I flipped to the freewheel side after about 100km, having developed a bit of knee pain. Why some people prefer fixed gear, I'm still not sure, yet the other side of the flip-flop hub seems to be calling out to me whenever I look at it...

Images should be responsive if the content is. No point in wasting bandwidth for everyone or using tiny images on high-resolution screens. The reason I prefer responsive images is mostly geeky and technical and might pertain to my work history. I also think that images should be hosted along with other content, ie. I strongly prefer self-hosting to Imgur or such. The reason is mostly ideological---I don't like the idea of forcing website visitors to use third-party services.

Well, I know about Jan Heine and that the test setups aren't necessarily very close to real life. Yeah, Marathon Almotion might not be the best rolling touring tire that exists. But it's a very good tire, and I got a pair for cheapish.
